UPDATE: This story has been quoted in the Washington Post.
Last night POLITICO broke a sexual harassment story on Cain that’s set Twitter on fire:
During Herman Cain’s tenure as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group, multiple sources confirm to POLITICO.
With 47,804 mentions in 24 hours, this has become the single most talked about controversy for the entire 2012 presidential election to date. Really. Let’s try to give this context.
- No other 2012 GOP candidate has gotten over 45,000 mentions in one day.
- The next most talked about candidate is Rick Perry with 7,785 mentions today, or 16% of the buzz.
- Barack Obama is the only politician to get more mentions in one day, and only twice:
When he killed Osama Bin Laden on May 1st, and when he passed the debt ceiling on July 29th.
Only during Cain’s October 18th debate performance has any 2012 GOP candidate gotten more mentions. Check out the reaction with some of the most shared tweets of the day below:
The big winner of this controversy is Rick Perry. His drunken speech has gone completely unnoticed. It’s embedded below for your enjoyment.
