Don’t feed the Trolls.

Welcome to the world of the Trolls. They’ve likely found you already, lured you into a heated exchange, and left you feeling pissed off. A troll is someone who posts inflammatory messages with the goal of provoking you into an emotional response. While Twitter can be an incredible vehicle for broad-based political dialogue, its anonymity provides a breeding ground for a very different subculture. The tweet above by @ameer1534 wins the Gold Medal in the Trollympics. What began as a pro-life political statement ended with a complaint being sent to the FBI.

Your first reaction will be to fire off a quick (and likely juvenile) response, delivered in a crude tone similar to the troll’s. You must resist. Remember this: you cannot win. They cannot be satisfied. Their goal is to get you angry, to bring you down to their level. Responding means you already lost. Instead, just ignore them. If you refuse to feed the Trolls they will wither away and die, leaving the best parts of Twitter to prosper.
